We are thrilled to welcome Mathias Malling Mortensen as our next resident at space52. The residency is organized by the Danish Institute in Athens & space52 for the month of April and supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and Ministry of Culture Denmark.
Mathias Malling Mortensen (born in Odense, Denmark, 1980) has studied at the Danish School of Media and Journalism. With a strong emphasis on the dynamics occurring when adding empty space to a canvas, Mortensen is constantly exploring spatiality, texture, form, and poetry in his work. The balance between surfaces and lines makes up the subject in his non-figurative pieces.
In his paintings, he expresses the sound of colors through chromatic juxtapositions. They are part of a geometric abstraction emphasizing the luminous surface of the painting into natural and crossed lines. A careful look of his paintings reveal the deteriorating marks of his brush strokes, gently distorting the two-dimensional picture surface and creating a surprise to the observer. On his first visit to Athens, Mathias is enchanted by its patterns, shapes, and architecture.
