What constitutes the spirit of α place and how is the skin of the landscape shaped? In her new solo exhibition, titled Spiritus Loci, at Space52, Stella Christofi investigates the conceptual construction of the landscape through paintings and sculptures, using walking practices as the main “vehicle” for her work.
Opposing the hegemony of vision through the retina, the artist proposes a non-representational painting rooted in multisensory perception. During her wanderings in both urban and natural environments, she collects instantaneous images with her camera, focusing on materialities, forms, textures, and the composing elements of the sensible that are not perceived at a glance.
Her works constitute an attempt to shape the porous “skin of the landscape,” a unified surface that functions as connective tissue between what the eye perceives and what is inscribed in the mind. At the same time, Christofi’s paper, stone-shaped sculptural landscapes function as signposts, lodestars that assist in our orientation. They also indirectly allude to the notion of temporal accumulation in the earth’s crust, which shapes the volumes and details of its surface.
In Christofi’s conceptual landscape painting, the non-places constitute small spatiotemporal and sensory passages between the witnessed event, which dissolves, and the spiritual contemplation that follows this experience. “The word “atopos,” which contains within it the word “topos” (place), both in Greek and in French (déplacé), describes the ineffable aspects of things or feelings that are rarely experienced—those that are extraordinary, original, and authentic in the strict sense. The images she collects during her walking journeys are transformed into parallel non-places and assemble a constellation of memories, desires, paths, destinies, and linguistic markers”, notes in the curatorial text, the curator of the exhibition, Vicky Tsirou.
In this context, the Latin neologism Spiritus Loci, a broad concept that can be translated into English as the spirit of a place, was chosen as the title of the exhibition, as it assembles all those factors which, though imperceptible, shape the identity of a place. It constitutes a compilation of properties based on the material substance and the atmosphere that an individual subjectively attributes to a place, and it is based on this experience that the characteristics making the place unique are formed.
Alongside the Spiritus Loci exhibition, Space52 will present work by Stella Christofi at Art Athina (September 18-22) at the Zappeion Megaron, as part of the Home is Me exhibition.
More about Stella Christofi
Stella Christofi (Cyprus, 1988) is a visual artist based in Athens. She is a Phd candidate at the Department of Visual Arts of the Athens School of Fine Arts. She studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts with a scholarship from the Cyprus State Scholarship Foundation (IKY) and at Paris 8 University with a scholarship from the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (IKY). She continued her studies with a master’s degree at the Department of Early Childhood Education and Care at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens with a scholarship from the Cyprus State Scholarship Foundation (IKY). She also holds a master’s degree in “Visual Arts and Landscape: Approaches to Urban and Natural Space” from the Department of Visual and Applied Arts at the University of Western Macedonia. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Romania, Moldova, and Berlin, as well as in artist residency programmes and workshops in Cameroon, Greece, Lithuania, and Jordan. She has published articles and presented papers in international conferences in Greece, Malta, and Cyprus. Her works are held in private and public collections in Cyprus, Greece, and abroad.

Τι συνιστά το πνεύμα του τόπου και πώς πλάθεται η επιδερμίδα του τοπίου; Η Στέλλα Χριστοφή, στην ατομική της έκθεση με τίτλο Spiritus Loci, στο Space52, διερευνά την εννοιολογική κατασκευή του τοπίου μέσα από ζωγραφικά και γλυπτικά έργα με κύριο μέσο την περιπατητική πρακτική.
Αντιτασσόμενη στην ηγεμονία της όρασης μέσω του αμφιβληστροειδούς, η καλλιτεχνις προτείνει μία μη αναπαραστατική ζωγραφική που έχει τις ρίζες της στην πολυαισθητηριακή αντίληψη. Kατά την περιπλάνησή της στο αστικό και το φυσικό περιβάλλον συλλέγει στιγμιογραφικές εικόνες με την φωτογραφική της κάμερα, εστιάζοντας σε υλικότητες, φόρμες, υφές και στα επιμέρους στοιχεία που συγκροτούν το αισθητό και δεν γίνονται αντιληπτά εν ριπή οφθαλμού.
Τα έργα της έκθεσης συνιστούν μία επίμονη προσπάθεια διαμόρφωσης της πορώδους «επιδερμίδας του τοπίου», μίας ενιαίας επιφάνειας που λειτουργεί ως συνδετικός ιστός ανάμεσα σε αυτό που προσλαμβάνει το μάτι και σε εκείνο που αποτυπώνεται στον νου. Παράλληλα, τα χάρτινα, πετρόσχημα, γλυπτικά τοπία της Χριστοφή, λειτουργούν ως οδοδείκτες και παραπέμπουν έμμεσα στην έννοια της χρονικής συσσώρευσης στον φλοιό της γης που διαμορφώνει τους όγκους και τις λεπτομέρειες της επιφάνειάς της.
Στην εννοιολογική τοπιογραφία της Χριστοφή, οι ά-τοποι τόποι συνιστούν μικρά χωροχρονικά και αισθητηριακά περάσματα, ανάμεσα στο ιδωμένο γεγονός που εξαϋλώνεται και στην πνευματική ενατένιση που ακολουθεί αυτή την εμπειρία. «Η λέξη “άτοπος”, που εμπεριέχει εντός της την λέξη “τόπος”, τόσο στα ελληνικά, όσο και στα γαλλικά (déplacé), περιγράφει το άρρητο των πραγμάτων ή των συναισθημάτων που σπάνια βιώνονται, που είναι εξαιρετικά, πρωτότυπα και αυθεντικά με τη στενή έννοια. Οι εικόνες που συλλέγει από τις περιπατητικές της διαδρομές μετατρέπονται σε παράλληλους μη-τόπους και συναρμόζουν ένα σύνολο απομνημονεύσεων, επιθυμιών, διαδρομών, πεπρωμένων και σημείων της γλώσσας», όπως αναφέρει στο επιμελητικό κείμενο η επιμελήτρια της έκθεσης Βίκυ Τσίρου.
Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, ο νεολατινισμός Spiritus Loci στον τίτλο της έκθεσης, μια ευρεία έννοια που αποδίδεται στα ελληνικά ως το πνεύμα του τόπου, συναρμόζει όλους τους παράγοντες που μολονότι αδιόρατοι, διαμορφώνουν την ταυτότητα ενός τόπου. Πρόκειται για ένα σύνολο ιδιοτήτων με βάση την υλική υπόσταση και την ατμόσφαιρα που αποδίδει το άτομο, υποκειμενικά, στον τόπο, και βάσει αυτού του βιώματος συγκροτούνται τα χαρακτηριστικά που το συνιστούν για εκείνο μοναδικό.
Παράλληλα με την έκθεση Spiritus Loci, το Space52 θα παρουσιάσει έργο της Στέλλας Χριστοφή στην Art Athina (18-22 Σεπτεμβρίου) στο Ζάππειο Μέγαρο, στην έκθεση Home is Me.

Η Στέλλα Χριστοφή (Κύπρος, 1988) είναι εικαστική καλλιτέχνιδα με έδρα την Αθήνα. Είναι υποψήφια διδάκτωρ στο Τμήμα Εικαστικών Τεχνών της Α.Σ.Κ.Τ. Σπούδασε ζωγραφική στην Ανωτάτη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών με υποτροφία του Ι.Κ.Υ Κύπρου και στο Πανεπιστήμιο Paris 8, με υποτροφία του Ι.Κ.Υ Ελλάδας. Συνέχισε τις σπουδές της με μεταπτυχιακό τίτλο σπουδών στην Σχολή Επιστημών Αγωγής, Τ.Ε.Α.Π.Η στο Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών με υποτροφία του Ι.Κ.Υ Κύπρου. Είναι επίσης κάτοχος μεταπτυχιακού τίτλου σπουδών στις «Εικαστικές τέχνες και τοπίο: Προσεγγίσεις του αστικού και φυσικού χώρου» από το Τμήμα Εικαστικών και Εφαρμοσμένων Τεχνών του Πανεπιστημίου Δυτικής Μακεδονίας. Έργα της έχουν παρουσιαστεί σε ατομικές, και ομαδικές εκθέσεις στην Ελλάδα, Κύπρο, Ιταλία, Ρουμανία, Μολδαβία, Βερολίνο και βρίσκονται σε ιδιωτικές και δημόσιες συλλογές στην Κύπρο, την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό. Έχει λάβει μέρος σε προγράμματα καλλιτεχνικής φιλοξενίας και εργαστήρια σε Καμερούν, Ελλάδα, Λιθουανία και Ιορδανία και έχει επίσης δημοσιεύσει άρθρα και συμμετάσχει με ανακοινώσεις σε διεθνή συνέδρια σε Ελλάδα, Μάλτα και Κύπρο.
